UFC may finally hold event in the Philippines in 2012

The UFC may finally make their first trip to the Philippines in 2012. In a press conference today in Quezon City, UFC-Asia's senior media director Kevin Chang revealed that they're working with major network ABS-CBN to bring an event to the region next year.

"There's a chance the UFC will hold fights in the Philippines. The UFC is working it out with ABS-CBN and Balls, maybe next year," he said (via PhilStar.com).

A UFC event in the Philippines has been a topic of discussion for several years now, but with the expansion into Japan, and the discussion of an Ultimate Fighter season in the Philippines as well, 2012 may finally be the year for the organization to make their debut.

Video: A reminder of Dan Henderson?s last stop in the Octagon

The last time Dan Henderson was in the UFC, he scored a knockout to remember. After coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" against Michael Bisping, Henderson was matched up with the Brit at UFC 100. Bisping circled towards Henderson's power hand, and Hendo made him pay for it.

After going 3-1 and winning the light heavyweight belt in Strikeforce, he's back in the UFC. Will he be able to stiffen Mauricio "Shogun" Rua like he did Bisping? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Aftermath of Hendo-Rua: Ice packs, blood and a title shot

What does a 41-year-old man look like after going five rounds in a classic MMA bout that you will tell your kids about? This:

Aftermath of Hendo-Rua: Ice packs, blood and a title shot

With the adrenaline of the evening still pumping, it's easy to say that Dan Henderson's tight win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua was the best fight in UFC history. There's no quantitative way to gauge if this was better than every other fight to grace the Octagon.

But I know that this is a fight I will continue to talk about with friends, family, and complete strangers. I know this is a fight that I feel lucky to have watched live. I know that this fight will sit on my DVR until the piece of machinery dies so that I can watch the bout again and again. I know that it covered both the canvas and Henderson's shorts in blood:

Aftermath of Hendo-Rua: Ice packs, blood and a title shot

A fight like that will leave a mark on MMA fans, but it remains to be seen what Henderson's next step is. UFC president Dana White said in the post fight press conference that Henderson has secured a title shot, but timing will dictate if it's at middleweight or light heavyweight.

More Health Issues Plague Paulo Filho; Out Of Bout With Khalidov

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

One time standout submission specialist, Paulo Filho has experienced one of the most noteworthy falls from grace in the history of the sport. Weight issues have plagued the Brazilian, as have glaring mental lapses, physical injuries and training inconsistencies. It looks as though Filho?s troubles have once again reared their ugly head.

Filho was initially tapped to collide with Mamed Khalidov in the main event of KSW 17 "Revenge". Those plans however, have now been thrown out the window, as numerous sources are reporting that Filho is experiencing serious health issues. Filho?s ailments remain undisclosed at this point, though the revelation of Filho?s withdrawal from the proposed bout doesn?t exactly come as shocking news.

Fortunately, organizers from Poland?s Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki have a back-up plan, and his name is Jesse Taylor.

Taylor will replace Filho, and in all honesty, he may make for a sturdier challenge for the highly underrated Khalidov. Taylor?s won five of his last six fights; included in that span, Taylor has defeated the rugged Tom Watson and the highly experienced Denis Kang. Since Taylor?s time on ?The Ultimate Fighter? he?s toppled numerous high caliber opponents, and proven a threat to anyone at 185 pounds.

Khalidov hasn?t exactly fallen on tough times himself. Mamed has won four of his last six, including big victories over Jorge Santiago, James Irvin, Matt Lindland and Japanese legend Yuki Sasaki.

KSW 17 "Revenge? takes place at the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland an November 26th.

Diego Brandao: I Came in Here to Destroy Everyone

Filed under:

Wednesday night's final episode of The Ultimate Fighter will show Diego Brandao getting the fight he asked for, against Bryan Caraway, with a spot on Saturday night's Ultimate Fighter Finale at stake.

In an interview with MMAFighting.com, Brandao said Caraway was the guy in the Ultimate Fighter house he most wanted to fight because he took personally some of the things Caraway had said to him.

Brandao also talked about the reputation he has developed over the course of this season of The Ultimate Fighter, with both UFC President Dana White and coach Michael Bisping saying that Brandao looks like a beast whom the other fighters shouldn't want to touch. And Brandao gave his thoughts about why he couldn't always get along with the other guys in the house.

The interview is below.

Michael David Smith: You said you wanted to fight Bryan Caraway. Why did you want him?
Diego Brandao: Because Bryan Caraway got in my face and challenged me. He'd come up to me in the house and say he wanted to fight me, and I'd just say, 'F-- you man. If you want to fight me we'll see who's the best.' I didn't come in here to make friends. I came in here to destroy everyone.

As you were preparing for that fight, were you able to formulate a specific game plan for Bryan? Did you have a sense for what you would need to do to win?
No, it wasn't so much planning anything. I just thought, 'This is the guy I need to beat.' And I wanted to finish him. I don't like to leave it to the judges. I like to destroy the guy.

Dana White said no one should want to fight you. How does it feel to hear that?
It's true that no one wanted to fight me inside the house. I feel good about it but that's not in my mind yet. I'm not the best because Dana says it. I want to show I'm the best because I can beat everybody else. That's what I'm out to prove. I feel confident that I can fight the toughest guys.

You didn't really seem to fit in with the other guys in the house. Did you not get along?
I didn't like when the other guys would get drunk every day while I was pushing myself. Those other guys weren't training enough for me. Even if they didn't have their own fights to train for I needed them to be ready because I needed to be training and I needed people to roll with, people to hold the pads for me. I was taking it seriously and some of them weren't.

Your attitude in the house seems a lot like your attitude in the cage. You mean business and you're not in there to be nice to anybody.
What I want is to be like Mike Tyson. I want to become like a Wanderlei Silva, a guy who gives a great show in every fight. The guys in the 145-pound class should be scared of me. I just go out there and do my job.

Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis reportedly re-booked as UFC on Fox 2 headliner

A fight the UFC originally scheduled for this past summer may be featured on their next network television event, as ESPN.com reports that Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will meet at UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago, Ill. on January 28.

The two were scheduled to meet in the main event of UFC 133 in Philadelphia this August, but a knee injury suffered by Davis took him out of the event. Evans then met Tito Ortiz in a rematch of their July 2007 draw, and stopped him by TKO in the second round. The win was his third straight since losing the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship against Lyoto Machida in 2009.

Davis is a perfect 9-0 in his MMA career, including a 5-0 mark in the UFC. The former national champion wrestler out of Penn State most recently defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by decision in March at UFC Fight Night 24.

No bouts for the UFC on Fox 2 card have been officially announced as of yet, but the UFC has confirmed the date and location for their second card on network television.

UPDATE: It should be noted that this fight is also reportedly going to be the headlining fight for this card. It was worthy of a pay-per-view slot, and it's still a good fight for this event as well.

At UFC 139 on Saturday night, Tom Lawlor pulled out another walkout to remember. The day after attending weigh-ins dressed as Steven Seagal, Lawlor walked out the Olivia Newton-John classic "Let's Get Physical," and used an exercise band to pump up along the way.

Despite loss, Lawlor continues reign as UFC walkout king

Unfortunately for Lawlor, the walkout didn't help him win his fight. Chris Weidman choked him unconscious in the first round. Still, kudos to any fighter who brings Olivia Newton-John to the Octagon.

Rampage Jackson Excited to Perform in Front of 'Favorite' Fans in Japan at UFC 144

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is very, very excited to to fight in Japan. All you have to do is ask him.

In a Monday morning press conference in the Land of the Rising Sun, Jackson told the Japanese media that it took some effort on his part to ensure his place on the UFC 144 card, and that he finally had his request granted after a non-stop, one-man campaign.

"I had to fight and complain and b---- to my manager," he said. "Now I think the representatives of UFC are upset with me a little bit ... But ask me, do I care?"

For Jackson, any amount of trouble was worth it because of his love of Japanese audiences, who in his opinion value effort above results, a seismic shift from American audiences.

Jackson, who will face Ryan Bader in the co-main event on February 26 in Saitama, Japan, is no stranger to Nipponese culture. From 2001 to 2006, he fought there 18 times while under the PRIDE promotion.

"Back when I was fighting here, I had so much energy," he said. "I just wanted to put on a good show for the fans because all the energy they give. In America, you're under so much pressure to win at all costs because the fans talk s--- to you if you lose even if it's a good, exciting fight. In Japan, it's just a different energy. Who knows? Maybe I'll take more chances and not care because it's all about the crowd. I react to the crowd. I don't care about the people watching on TV."

It was in Japan where he authored some of his most memorable career moments, including the often-replayed powerbomb knockout win over Ricardo Arona in June 2004. That fight holds particular significance to Jackson because it took place on his 26th birthday.

It was also in Japan where Jackson became renowned for his slams, a particular favorite of the Japanese crowds who enjoyed his aggressive, improvisational style. In a rare bit of public introspection, Jackson noted that since signing with the UFC though, his game has gotten standup-heavy at times.

"Actually my standup has evolved a lot since I last fought here, but at the same time that's what's gotten me in trouble a lot lately," he said. "Everyone sees me boxing a lot more, so they're creating great game plans to counter my boxing. In Japan, I used to slam a lot and put on more of a show because the energy from the fans gave me power and I don't feel the same energy in the US. So, I can't honestly say I improved or evolved in a good way since leaving Japan."

But in some ways, that doesn't matter to Jackson right now, because he's only concerned about entertainment value. One new wrinkle the fighters will have to prepare for is fighting early in the morning. While most fights take place late Saturday night, this event will occur in the morning in Japan in order to sync up with American TV viewing habits.

Jackson noted that as a youth, he was in plenty of fights that came unexpectedly, and he has the time to plan for an early morning peak. He also said that the hardest part of fight day is usually the anticipation of what is to come, and that competing early in the day would cancel out much of that nervous energy.

Beyond that, he said that the biggest obstacle in his way is Bader, and more specifically, making sure he and his opponent understand the collective mind set of Japanese fans.

"The only thing that matters when he steps in the cage in Japan is that he comes in to put on an exciting show," he said. "I'm all about putting on an exciting fight in Japan. One thing I love about Japanese fans and why I love them the most is that they don't care if you win or lose. All they care is if you have samurai spirit, that you put on a good fight. That's why Japanese fans are my favorite. And American fans are jealous that I say that all the time."

TV gold: ?Angry? Sonnen walks off Canadian talk show

Sometimes it's hard to tell if Chael Sonnen is serious when he goes off certain media members. Often times it's part of the bit.

On Wednesday, during an interview on Canada's "Off the Record," Sonnen's act seemed pretty real. Towards the end of a contentious interview, Sonnen took off his microphone and bailed on the conversation.

OTR host Michael Landsberg began the discussion by asking Sonnen why he backed down from his challenge of "leaving the UFC" if lost to Anderson Silva in their eventual fight in 2012.

"You might want to take the base out of your tone, I'm not sure you know who you're talking to here, but I've never backed down from anything, so check your facts," stated Sonnen.

Landsberg asked again.

"What are you talking about?," asked Sonnen. "What is this, your first day on the job? You're mixing five different stories here. This is like doing amateur hour or something. What show am I on here? Is this for public radio?"

Sonnen said he couldn't back away from an offer, since the offer was never accepted by Silva. That's when his sharp tongue began slice away at Canada.

"That's not how offers work. Is that how you do business in Canada? Cause in my country, that created business, offers expire," Sonnen said. "I made him an offer, apparently it didn't work, he didn't accept it. It's not that I backed down, but apparently I need to present him with a new offer. You guys probably don't do that in socialism, but in America, in a capitalistic society, that's how things work."

Five minutes into the second take, Landsberg and Sonnen were still verbally sparring and the fighter decided to leave.

So who really snapped - Sonnen or Landsberg?

Weekend Results: War Machine TKOs Roger Huerta

Filed under:

In his first fight back after serving a year-long prison sentence for felony assault, War Machine, formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver, stopped Roger Huerta this past Saturday at the inaugural Ultimate Warrior Fighting event in Pharr, Texas.

Huerta, who was fighting up a weight class at welterweight, said afterwards that he suffered a fractured a rib during the final scramble in the third round where he rolled out of War Machine's submission armbar attempts to claim side control.

From there, War Machine escaped from Huerta's side mount to directly take full mount with ease. Machine (12-4) then rained down punches for the referee stoppage at three minutes and nine seconds. Huerta (21-6-1) has now lost three in a row.

On the same stage as War Machine-Huerta, former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne won by first-round guillotine submission over Eric Davila.

Thompson explodes after controversial decision
Last May at KSW 16, James Thompson submitted Mariusz Pudzianowski with an arm-triangle choke and he probably needed another finish as well to ensure victory at Saturday's KSW 17 in Poland. In a two-round fight with a potential overtime round, Thompson won the first round clearly on ground control, while Pudzianowski arguably scored enough on punches in the second. But instead of going to a Thompson win or an overtime round, Pudzianowski was awarded the majority decision.

Stunned by the scores, Thompson took the mic away from the announcer and went off on the promoter.

"F---ing joke. Give Mariusz a big round of applause," Thompson said. "What a f---ing joke. I thought KSW was really trying to be serious. If you can watch that back and call it serious, then you're f---ed and KSW is going down the f---ing toilet."

On Monday, KSW said there was an error on one of the judge's scorecards and the result has officially changed to a no contest.

Here's the video of Thompson's post-fight speech. Language not safe for work.
