Dave Herman Denies Using Marijuana, but 'I Can't Say I'm Not Around It'

Filed under:

Dave HermanDave "Pee Wee" Herman said he was "surprised" to learn he'd failed a pre-licensing drug test before his scheduled UFC 136 bout with Mike Russow, and while he insists he never ingested any banned substances, he's readying himself for a suspension just the same.

Herman said he was informed on Wednesday that he'd been denied a license by the Texas commission due to a failed drug test for marijuana, though a second test for steroids came up clean, he said.

"I do not smoke marijuana," Herman told MMA Fighting. "I can't say I'm not around it. I live in California. Pretty much everyone out here smokes weed. Maybe I need to pick my friends a little better. I don't know."

When asked if it was his belief that simply being in the presence of marijuana smoke might have caused the positive test result, Herman replied, "Like I said, I see people smoking weed every day."

Susan Stanford, of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, told MMA Fighting that medical privacy laws prevented her from disclosing any information about Herman's drug test results, but confirmed that "he was denied a license."

Herman initially told Clinch Gear Radio that he'd been asked to take a second drug test after the lab where he was tested told him that it had lost his first sample. Stanford explained that the testing is done entirely through private labs, and the commission never has possession of the sample, but would have likely been informed if a sample had been lost.

On Thursday, Herman told MMA Fighting that the lab had asked him to submit two separate samples so that it could test one for drugs of abuse and another for steroids.

"When I talked to Texas they said that there wasn't enough of the first sample to do both tests," said Herman. "The first sample they just tested one thing and the second sample they tested something else. ...They just said the first one was positive for marijuana. The second one wasn't positive for anything."

What surprised Herman most, he said, was when he read internet reports that claimed he had tested positive for both marijuana and steroids.

"It got worse and worse. The first article I clicked on just quoted me from my interview and it looked pretty much right. The second one was like, '[Herman] denies use of steroids.' Then the third one was like, positive for marijuana and steroids. I'm like, how did you jump from that to that to that?"

The UFC's Marc Ratner said he had no information as of yet, and hadn't seen anything on paper regarding Herman's tests or what possible repercussions he might be facing.

For his part, Herman is expecting to be suspended on top of losing his chance to fight Russow in Houston on October 8.

"I don't think there's anything I can really do," he said. "Obviously, this fight's already gone. Even if I go in today and pass everything, this fight's already done. Pretty much I guess I just wait. They said I'll probably have a short suspension. From researching other guys who have tested positive, the max suspension they've ever seen is 30 days. So I guess I wait 30 days and pass a drug test and try to get another fight lined up."

In the meantime, Herman said he's struggling to get over the disappointment of spending weeks preparing for the fight only to see the opportunity disappear and get replaced with the threat of disciplinary action.

"I was feeling good, was in really great shape," he said. "I didn't really want to get up and go to practice this morning, but I did anyway. I guess I just have a little extra time to hone everything and get better."

Will UFC on Fox help boxing?s cause? De La Hoya says yes

Golden Boy Promotions and boxing had a huge week with the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight. Meanwhile, the UFC was putting together all the details on its first network television show on Fox on Nov. 12. It's short term vs. long term. Boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya understands that and had nothing but good things to say about the Fox deal.

"I congratulate Dana White for doing an amazing job," De La Hoya said. "My utmost respect to Dana White. I believe he's a brilliant guy. He's a tremendous guy to have in a combat sport."

There is no jealousy coming from DLH because he believes the Fox deal could pave the way for boxing to get back on network TV.

"I can feel very confident in saying that, sooner rather than later, it will be back on network television," De La Hoya said. "When you put good fights together people want to watch, and when you have any type of network television behind boxing you will create good ratings."

De La Hoya said Golden Boy is working on taking those steps. Would boxing sacrifice HBO, Showtime and most importantly pay-per-view money to put free fights on network television? We'll see. Frankly, it's probably not up to the boxing promoters. Television executives will make the decision and they certainly need to be re-sold on the viability of the combat sport that was on network television until the early 80's.

Diego Brandao 'Feels Great' After Being The Ultimate Fighter's Top Pick

Filed under:

Diego BrandaoMichael Bisping made Diego Brandao the first pick among the featherweights on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, indicating that Bisping views Brandao as the most talented fighter of the bunch on this year's cast.

In our weekly interview, Brandao said that's pretty much how he viewed himself as well -- he headed into The Ultimate Fighter house confident in his abilities, and after getting a look at the rest of this season's cast, he thought he was among the best fighters on the show.

We talked with Brandao about his status as the first overall pick, how the training he got at the Ultimate Fighter gym compared to what he had before, and what he thought of the season's first fight, between Bryan Carraway and Marcus Brimage.

The interview is below.

Michael David Smith: You were the first overall pick. How did that make you feel?
Diego Brandao: I feel great about it. I think it was because of my jiu jitsu, the coaches saw those skill I had, and in my first fight to get onto the show I showed that I was one of the strongest guys. I think at that time I felt more confident than the other guys. Getting picked first meant a lot and I felt great at the start of the show.

Getting picked first meant that Bisping thought you were the best of the featherweights. Is that also what you thought?
Yes, I always believe in myself. I always think to myself, I'm the best guy, no one is going to come to me and take my dream away. But when I saw those guys I did see there were a lot of other good guys there, too. I thought there were guys that would challenge me, but I was confident in myself.

Did the coaching you got at the start of the show differ from what you were accustomed to, training with Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn?
I learned a lot during but before I went down there I also felt like I knew a lot from my own camp. I wasn't thinking, "Oh, my gosh, this is The Ultimate Fighter!" I was just thinking like I had already prepared myself.

In the first fight of the season, Bryan Carraway beat Marcus Brimage with a rear-naked choke in the second round. Did you have any thoughts about that, as Carraway was a potential opponent for you in a later round of the season?
I think Bryan is an aggressive guy who looked good, he has very good submissions and I think he has a jiu jitsu background like me. I enjoyed watching it and felt like it was a fun fight to watch.

(Editor's Note: Check back every Thursday to get Brandao's thoughts on the recent TUF episode).

UFC Live Cruz vs. Johnson Predictions

Filed under:

Dominick CruzWill Dominick Cruz continue his reign of dominance over the bantamweight division, or will Demetrious Johnson become the new UFC 135-pound champion? Will Stefan Struve capitalize on his enormous reach advantage, or will Pat Barry get inside and test Struve's chin? Can Charlie Brenneman knock off Anthony Johnson and improve to 3-0 in 2011? We'll attempt to answer those questions as we predict the winners on Saturday night's fight card.

What: UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson

Where: Verizon Center, Washington, D.C.

When: Saturday, the Facebook preliminary card starts at 6 PM ET and the Versus televised card begins at 9.

Predictions on the four Versus fights below.

Dominick Cruz vs. Demetrious Johnson
Johnson, nicknamed "Mighty Mouse," is small even for the 135-pound weight class, and he's going to have a very, very difficult time against the tall and lanky Cruz, who is as good as anyone in the sport at using his reach advantage to prevent his opponents from getting near him. Johnson would love to get inside and take Cruz down repeatedly, as he did in winning decisions over Kid Yamamoto and Miguel Torres to get this title fight, but that's a very tall order against Cruz.

For Cruz, the path to victory looks a lot like what he's been doing throughout his title reign: He needs to use his awkward movement and high-volume striking to keep Johnson on the outside and keep him frustrated. Although Johnson's quickness may be something Cruz hasn't seen before, Johnson looks like an opponent Cruz should be able to handle standing up for 25 minutes.

And so I like Cruz to do what he usually does: Win by unanimous decision.
Pick: Cruz

Pat Barry vs. Stefan Struve
The enormous height difference between Struve (the UFC's tallest fighter) and Barry (the UFC's shortest heavyweight) makes this fight interesting visually, but what makes it especially interesting is that neither one of these guys fights the way you'd expect someone his height to fight: Struve often fails to take advantage of his reach and instead lets his opponents get inside and test his chin, while Barry doesn't let his short, stocky legs prevent him from throwing plenty of kicks.

Barry probably has an advantage if the fight stays standing, but I think this fight will eventually go to the ground, and Struve will have an enormous advantage on the canvas -- even if he has to get knocked down to get there. Look for Barry to leave himself exposed on the ground and Struve to capitalize and win by submission.
Pick: Struve

Anthony Johnson vs. Charlie Brenneman
Johnson returned after more than a year away and put a one-sided beating on Dan Hardy in March, and he'll look to do it again when he takes on Brenneman, who's coming off a big win over Rick Story. I think the savvy Brenneman is going to give Johnson a lot more trouble on the ground than most people expect, and win a decision.
Pick: Brenneman

Matt Wiman vs. Mac Danzig
Some unfinished business between these two is finally about to get resolved: At UFC 115 in June of 2010, Wiman won when referee Yves Lavigne wrongly thought Danzig had passed out while in a guillotine choke. (In reality, Danzig was alert and defending himself.) The UFC tried to book them in an immediate rematch, but injuries got in the way. Now they're finally ready to meet again, and I like Wiman to win legitimately this time, taking a decision.
Pick: Wiman

Spike Plans To Counter Program UFC On Fox Debut

By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Things continue to get dirty between the UFC and Spike TV as today Spike announced plans to counter program the UFC's debut on the Fox television network that will feature a heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos, with their own UFC: Unleashed marathon featuring past bouts featuring Velasquez and Dos Santos.

It's a dirty trick employed by the UFC themselves when they were in good with Spike. Multiple times other promotions would be hosting PPV events and the UFC would air one of their own PPV's from weeks prior free on Spike and it typically worked every time, forcing any potential challenger out of buisness.

The Spike show will be dubbed "Dos Santos vs. Velasquez: Unleashed for the Heavyweight Title" and will air in the same time slot as the UFC Heavyweight Title fight on Fox.

There also isn't much the UFC can do about it. Spike owns the rights to the UFC library through 2012 so their only option is to offer up a boat load of money to buy those rights back.

UFC 135?s Three Stars: Jones, Koscheck and Diaz

UFC 135?s Three Stars: Jones, Koscheck and Diaz

The UFC went to mountains on Saturday, and while the elevation made for some long heavyweight bouts, stars did shine. Here are Cagewriter's picks for the three stars of the evening. Tell us your picks in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Jon Jones: Quinton Jackson wanted "his" belt back, but after Jones picked him apart and choked him out, that belt belongs to no one but Jones. Jackson pointed out that he was in the best shape of his life, and Jones still owned him. Rashad Evans is up next for the champ. Can Jones keep his streak going against his former friend?

No. 2 star -- Josh Koscheck: Taking the fight on very short notice, Koscheck showed that nine months on the shelf didn't slow him at all. His knockout of UFC Hall-of-Famer Matt Hughes earned Kos a $75,000 knockout of the night bonus.

No. 3 star -- Nate Diaz: After bouncing back and forth between welterweight and lightweight, Diaz looked comfortable at lightweight as he outboxed Takanori Gomi, then finished him with an armbar. That submission earned him a $75,000 submission of the night bonus. Diaz said that he was done with welterweight, and with that result, who can blame him?

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Wandy in for Belfort, OSP gets Mousasi

The Zuffa yentes have been hard at work, making matches, finding finds, catching catches for UFC 139 and the Strikeforce event in December.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Wandy in for Belfort, OSP gets Mousasi

Dana White announced on Twitter that Wanderlei Silva will now fight Cung Le at UFC 139. Vitor Belfort, who had been tabbed for the main event, is injured. Silva's last fight was a brutal KO by Chris Leben, and afterwards, White had suggested that Silva retire. This is on the same card that will feature Dan Henderson's return to the UFC against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Strikeforce made the first official announcement for their Dec. 17 card that still doesn't have a venue. Former light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi will fight Ovince St. Preux. Mousasi's last Strikeforce bout was a draw against Keith Jardine. He won a DREAM bout in Japan in July over Hiroshi Izumi.

St. Preux, who has risen through the ranks in Strikeforce and is on an eight-fight win streak, submitted Joe Cason on a July Challengers card. UFC 140 briefly adds Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida, but UFC boss 'jumped gun' (Updated)

A blockbuster light-heavyweight bout was coming to UFC 140. For a short time anyway.

UFC president Dana White said he jumped the gun in announcing that former champ Lyoto Machida will meet fast-rising and undefeated contender Phil Davis at December's UFC 140 event.

Instead, he said Davis is still recovering from a knee injury.

According to a new report from ?Folha de Sao Paulo?, representatives from the UFC were in Brazil this week meeting with Sao Paulo mayor, Gilberto Kassab and governor Geraldo Alckmin to discuss the possibility of hosting a season of The Ultimate Fighter in Sao Paulo.

The company is also planning on holding their next Brazilian PPV card at the Cicero Pompeu de Toledo stadium, also known as Morumbi, home of Sao Paulo's soccer team. The venue will hold 70,000 spectators for a soccer game so it is expected they could easily fit 100,000 for a MMA event.

Following the success of the companies return to Brazil in August with UFC 134, the first event in the country since the late 90's, Brazil is on the UFC's global domination map.

Jose Aldo's hometown of Manaus is also a place of interest for the UFC. Lorenzo Fertita was in town during the week of UFC 134 meeting with it's governor to discuss the idea of a show.

On the eve of fight Evans changes his tune, now likes Jackson?s chances

Rashad Evans loves screwing with Jon Jones, so it doesn't come as a shocker that a little over 24 hours away from Jones' showdown against Quinton Jackson, "Suga" is now leaning towards "Rampage" at UFC 135.

Evans got a chance to see how serious Jackson was training for the fight:

"Yeah. I went to Muscle Pharm yesterday and I walked through the facility and I seen some of the things that he was doing and then I seen him and he was looking good, better than I've ever seen him before and I was actually really surprised. I just think that a guy like that that can get focused and get dialed Is a dangerous guy if he can get focused and dialed in. I think Jon Jones' mistake is he thinks he's too good right now. He thinks he can't be beat," Evans told 106.7 The Fan.

He also has extensive first-hand experience training with Jones and believe he may break at some point tomorrow night.

"Well, I've seen him get pushed in practice and I've seen him be very human and not as good as he looks on TV. I've seen that there's times where he looks great in practice but there's times where I've seen him quit in practice," said Evans.

Evans was really selling Jackson hard:

"A Rampage that's focused is a dangerous Rampage and I think that the biggest problem with Jon Jones is the fact that he's getting so overly confident and cocky that he can't get beat and all he has to do is step in the cage Saturday and collect his belt. I think that's dangerous thinking when you've got somebody in front of you who's been training hard."

Wow, the drama continues on "as the UFC light heavyweights turn." Keep in mind, earlier in the week Evans was having a tough time picking Jackson.

"I think that Jon Jones uses his range and his speed to keep Rampage off balance and at the same time using his ability to take Rampage down to try to impose some of his will. I think Jon tries to get it done, I think he does it standing up," said Evans.

Georges St. Pierre says Anderson Silva is the UFC's top fighter

UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre recently opened up again on the possibility of a future ?super-fight? pitting him against pound-for-pound peer Anderson Silva, again expressing his interest in the match-up but also leaving a hint of doubt in terms of it ever actually taking place.
