The MMA Christmas Wish List!

By MATT MOLGAARD
The holidays are upon us. Christmas is just days away, the eggnog has taken up residence within the confines of the refrigerator, the liquor has been restocked, trees decorated, presents wrapped and massive meals are on the cusp of preparation. This year I?ll be providing a Christmas wish list, which boasts all the wonderful scenario?s one could ask for in relation to our captivating sport.

Please, someone test Georges St. Pierre soon!

GSP has run roughshod on the welterweight division. The multifaceted Canadian has won nine consecutive fights, and looked virtually unbeatable in the process. He?s successfully defended the title six times in his current run as champion, and the mystique and mystery of his fights are beginning to dwindle due to his unbelievable domination; where?s the suspense if you already know who?s exiting the cage the victor? It?s time for GSP to step into fire, and whether Carlos Condit or Nick Diaz are capable of doing that remains to be seen, but one way or another, I think the world would really like to see St. Pierre forced to truly battle to keep a grip on that belt; these shocking mismatches have become a bit dull.

All I want for Christmas is Fedor Emelianenko

Fedor Emelianenko is now in the twilight of his career. He?s lost a step, and we?ve now seen a few holes in his wrestling defense beginning to develop. That said, he?s still a fast, powerful heavyweight with a fight IQ rarely rivaled. His most recent outing came against former UFC heavyweight title challenger, Jeff Monson, and while Monson looked a bit like a zombie, much of his ineffectiveness came as a result of the speed and crisp strikes delivered by the Russian. I don?t expect to see Fedor make any kind of serious run at the UFC?s title, but I?d still love to see him sign the contract and give the fans what they?ve pleaded for over the last half decade. The fact that Fedor?s aura of invincibility has been broken only makes things more interesting: Fedor could enter the UFC ranks without the weight of the MMA world on his shoulders, which could certainly benefit the man who was recognized as the greatest heavyweight for nearly a complete decade.

Wrap the Sonnen/Silva rematch with a blood red bow!

As a fan, this is a rematch that absolutely must happen. Chael Sonnen will tangle with Mark Munoz at UFC on FOX 2, with the winner to be tabbed the number one contender. If all goes as most fans hope, Sonnen will emerge victorious and secure a second fight with the champion, Anderson Silva. The pairs first meeting was both sensational and shocking, as Sonnen dominated the fight all the way into the final frame, before Silva rallied with a slick triangle choke that elicited a frustrated tap by the challenger. It was an awe inspiring performance from Sonnen, and an amazing comeback from Silva. One can only hope the rematch provides fireworks of similar caliber. Either way, this is a fight that sits at the top of my Christmas wish list!

FUEL TV? Expand, for the love of the sport!

We know that as a part of the UFC?s new seven year contract with FOX, FUEL TV will be airing plenty of events and preliminary cards. That all sounds quite pleasing, but there?s a problem, at this point, FUEL TV reaches less than 30 million homes in America. I for one am not privy to the channel, and I?m well aware of the fact that plenty of others sit in the same boat. It?s a frustrating situation, and while FUEL may be owned by FOX, it may not be the best home for future UFC action. Here?s wishing more cable providers pick up the channel without including it in an outrageous package that hovers around the $200 a month mark.

Will the real Ricardo Arona please stand up?

Ricardo Arona hasn?t fought in nearly two and a half years. Why the Brazilian standout has opted to sit on the sidelines is a mystery: this man has a diverse tool belt, a load of top notch experience, extremely noteworthy victories and an upbeat attitude that fans stateside would likely gravitate to. Arona defeated a prime Wanderlei Silva, throttled Alistair Overeem, punished Kazushi Sakuraba and took a split decision nod over Dan Henderson. Why this man has been sitting on shelf for two plus years is puzzling, but it?s also ridiculous. Someone sign this man and get him back in action, we?re missing a freak of nature that always makes for an entertaining fight!

Dana, swallow the pride, bring Barnett over!

The Strikeforce heavyweight tournament has yet to wrap. Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier are the final two men standing, and regardless of who emerges victorious, both of these gentlemen deserve to fight within the octagon. That said, Josh is the more deserving of the two at this point. He possesses what many would argue to be the most well rounded skill set in the division, he hasn?t lost in five years, holds some insanely significant wins and has a very marketable mouth piece on him. As much as I hate to say it, I can?t genuinely believe Junior dos Santos is the greatest heavyweight alive until he defeats ?The Warmaster?, who should be recognized as the number two heavyweight in the world by all major publications and ranking systems: he?s earned it, especially as of late. Please Dana, let the petty feuding die and brig this monster over!
